Past Reality Integration
Anxiety and Panic Attacks
Past Reality Integration (PRI) teaches you to live life more and more ‘defense-free’. Anxiety and panic, examples of defense mechanisms, thus lose their function and disappear.
We are afraid of what has already happened
It is very unpleasant to feel that your life is controlled by anxiety. PRI shows that although anxiety seems to be about the here and now, that is not true.
Anxiety has a specific function. The reason you become afraid in situations that are not dangerous is that your brain distracts your attention from a deeper, painful feeling that arose much earlier in your life. In the period when you were still a small, dependent child who could not take care of himself.
In situations that somehow resemble what you once experienced and what felt life-threatening at the time, your anxiety becomes active and makes you believe that you are in danger now.
Different forms of anxiety
You may generally feel anxious often. It may also be that your anxiety is more focused, such as fear of social contact, places where many people come, such as (public) transport, public places (such as parking spaces and market squares) or enclosed spaces (such as shops and cinemas).
Another form of anxiety is specific phobias such as for blood, natural phenomena (for example, thunderstorms, heights, water), injections or injuries, certain animals (for example, spiders or dogs), elevators, driving or flying.
Anxiety and panic often go hand in hand with certain clear physical reactions (such as, among other things, diarrhea, abdominal pain, sweating, palpitations, trembling, hyperventilation, dizziness or nausea).

How can PRI help with anxiety and panic attacks?
With the help of PRI, you will learn to recognize which situations in your daily life cause your feelings of anxiety to arise.
Then, with your therapist, you will discover the old, repressed painful feelings that lie beneath. This will gradually separate your past from the present. This causes anxiety and panic to lose their function, and therefore, they disappear.
The result is that you are less often, less long and less intensely at the mercy of anxiety and panic. Moreover, you gain control over it yourself, because your therapist teaches you how to apply the PRI instruments yourself, now and in the future. Your physical complaints will decrease and you will experience more and more freedom of movement in your life.
