Sadness and Depression
Sadness and depressive symptoms cover up other, deeper feelings. With PRI, you learn to detach the past from the present. The symptoms thus lose their function and disappear.
Sadness, gloominess, and depression
A gloomy period can last a few days or weeks; but such a relatively short period of gloominess can suddenly become a longer period of despondency, and thus turn into a depression.
A dangerous vicious cycle
Depressions often last longer, sometimes even months or years. The cause can be a clear, major event such as the loss of a loved one, illness, dismissal, or the ending of a relationship. Or sometimes, gloomy or depressive feelings have been simmering in the background for longer, and you don't know exactly why you feel this way.
You often have a heavy or listless feeling. You can no longer really enjoy fun things, and you no longer feel cheerful when you are with your partner, children, or friends. Things are often too much, and you quickly feel overwhelmed. You prefer not to get off the couch anymore, which in turn makes you feel bad... A very nasty vicious cycle that can feel like you will never get out of it.
The good news is: there is a way out!
Sadness and depressive symptoms have a very specific function: they cover up other, deeper feelings. Feelings from your early childhood, which belong to events that were too painful to process when you were still so small and dependent. These have left an impression in your cells and in your brain.
The depressive feelings have come over it so that you don't have to feel that deepest pain. And every time in your life when you are unconsciously confronted with situations that resemble what you have not been able to process, that sadness becomes active.
Depression and PRI
Watch the video in which Ingeborg Bosch explains how PRI views depression.
How can PRI help with sadness and depression?
With the help of PRI, you will learn to recognize which situations in your daily life cause your sad, heavy feelings to arise. Then, with your therapist, you will discover which old, repressed painful feelings lie beneath them. This way, you gradually detach your past from the present. The depressive symptoms thus lose their function and disappear.
The result is that you are less often, less long, and less intensely at the mercy of sadness and depression. Moreover, you gain control over it yourself, because your therapist teaches you how to apply the PRI instruments yourself, now and in the future.
